SMOKING BEHAVIOR AND CHANGES IN BODY IMAGE AMONG ADOLESCENTS DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC
Smoking is often associated with numerous health problems. Those who smoke have a higher risk of respiratory problems and weakened immune systems when exposed to COVID-19. For smokers, the risk of being infected with COVID 19 is doubled that of those who do not smoke. Moreover, COVID-19 infection may also bring change in body image. This study aimed to identify smoking behavior and changes in body image among adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research was a descriptive study with a cross-sectional design. There were 165 senior high school students in Aceh Besar who were chosen as research respondents through the total sampling technique. Fagerstrom (FTND) and Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ-34) were used as the instruments for the data collection. The results revealed that the level of smoking behavior of adolescents during the pandemic was in a high category (75.8%). Conversely, adolescents' change in body image was in a low category (10.2%). The schools are urged to collaborate with the local Community Health Centers (Puskesmas) through the school health service unit (UKS) to prevent and control students' smoking behavior and promote positive body image, which will improve their health altogether.
