Judul : An Analysis of Strategies and Barriers in Teaching Speaking Classes through E-Learning During Covid-19 Pandemic at Politeknik Pelayaran Malahayati Aceh

Abstract Name : Dewi Ertika Pane Student No. : 1706202020039 Department/Program : English Education/ Graduate Program Title : An Analysis of Strategies and Barriers in Teaching Speaking Classes through E-Learning During Covid-19 Pandemic at Politeknik Pelayaran Malahayati Aceh Keywords: Teaching Strategy, Speaking, E-Learning, Synchronous Learning, Asynchronous Learning This research is aimed to explore the strategies used and to figure out the barriers faced by the lecturers in teaching speaking classes through e-learning during the Covid-19 pandemic at Politeknik Pelayaran Malahayati Aceh. The data were collected through doing observation and interviewing two English lecturers. The result showed that in teaching speaking, the lecturers used a few techniques; role-play, discussion, storytelling, picture describing, comprehending the text with audio and group presentation which is conducted by synchronous or asynchronous modes. Furthermore, the e-learning speaking classes by using zoom meeting (synchronous mode) were more interactive than by using e-learning portal (asynchronous mode) because there were fewer gaps between lecturers and the cadets, and the lecturers could do more various activities not only on the main sessions but also on opening and closing sessions. It was also found that the lecturers faced some barriers in teaching speaking through e-learning as lack of students’ engagement and participation, lack of reliability in assessment, and technical issues such as limited internet network and internet quota.
