The objective of th.is study is to look at some given theories and/or research findings on the use of Debate Technique in teaching speaking. Speaking is very important for students in learning English as foreign language. However, the students sometimes get difficulties in speaking such as lack of motivation to practice speaking in daily conversation and also shy to speak English. To solve the difficulties, the teacher should apply the appropriate technique in teaching speaking. The study found that using Debate Technique can help students to improve verbal communication and critical thinking, where they can be more active in every situation (Yuliani, 2009: 18). Debate is different from other techniques. In debate the students are given some topics to be discussed. The result of this study can be used as a treatment mode) in learning speaking. The method used in this study is library research. The data were collected in the journals, thesis, books and articles related to teaching learning theory.
It is strongly suggested that debate is used as a technique in empowering the speaking skill.
