Key Words: Understanding, Unity, Coherence and Ability
This study is entitled " Correlation between Understanding of Unity and Coherence and the Ability in Writing ( A Case Study at English Department of Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Syiah Kuala University)". It is conducted to find out the correlation between student's knowledge about unity and coherence and their performance in writing. In other words, this study was conducted to investigate whether the students who have good understanding of unity and coherence can produced a well developed writing. The samples of this study were 20 sixth semester students of English Department that were chosen by using purposive random sampling. The method used in this study was descriptive quantitative method. Here, the samples were given two kinds of tests. Those are a set of theory test conducted to know their understanding of unity and coherence and a set of writing test conducted to know their ability to develop a topic sentence into 100- 150 words paragraph. The tests were taken on 11" and 13" of May, 2009 at RKU IV. The result of this research shows that generally students who got high score in theory test also got high score in writing test. On the other band, the students who got low score in theory test also got low score in writing test. From the statistical analysis by using rank- order correlation formula, the obtained coefficient of correlation is 0, 7. This result shows that the correlation between the two variables is positive and significant. In conclusion, there is a significant correlation between students' understanding about unity and coherence and their writing ability.
