Thesis Title : Teaching Reading Skill by Using Jigsaw Model to Senior
High School Students


The objective of this study is to discuss some theories and research findings that are related to the use of cooperative learning, especially jigsaw model in teaching reading skill. Reading is an important skill that has to be taught for students to get information (KTSP, 2006; Celce, 2001) However, some students face difficulties in comprehending an English text because they do not know word meaning in context (Hanger, 2005). Therefore, an English teacher should apply an appropriate model in teaching reading skill (Sasson, 2007). The method used in this study is library research that is done by analyzing and discussing some theories and research findings of cooperative learning method especially jigsaw model. Those theories and research findings that are related to the study are obtained from books, articles, and journals. Then, the data are analyzed and described using descriptive qualitative manner. The study finds that using jigsaw model helps students to enhance their reading skill and focus on their learning because they work together and help each others in doing tasks (Manning & Lucking, 1991). It also increases students'
motivation in learning and makes them responsible for their own learning (Ruddell,2005; Kilic et al., 2008). The jigsaw model gives an opportunity to students to teach each others (Aronson, 2005; Gunter, 1995). It can be concluded that jigsaw is an effective model to encourage students' participation and enthusiasm in learning an English text.
