This study aims at examining whether the use of STAD technique can improve
junior high school students’ reading ability in understanding recount text.
Quantitative approach with experimental study of pretest-postest control group
design was undertaken to overcome the problems faced by students in learning
reading skill. The instrument used to collect the data in this study by means of the
test in the form of multiple choice test. The results of the test analyzed by using some
statistical formula. From the results of the study revealed there is a significant
improvement on students’ reading ability after STAD technique implemented. Thus,
this technique can be used by the English teacher as one of alternative techniques in
teaching English particularly teaching reading in EFL class.
