This research is intended to: (1) discover the learning strategies used by the high, middle and low achievers of the seventh grade student at SMPS Darul Quran in learning English, (2) find out the efforts of seventh grade students at SMPS Darul Quran Aceh in improving English achievement. This study used qualitative and quantitative method. The population of this research is the students at SMP Darul Quran Aceh, meanwhile the sample is the seveth grade students that consisted of 66 students. The sample was choosen by using total sampling technique. To collect the data, a questionnaire of Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL), English score and interviews are used. The SILL questionaire distributed to know the students‘response to each items in the SILL description. The strategies examined in SILL questionnaire consisisted of six items, namely memory, cognitive, conpensation, metacognitive affective and social strategies. English scores were used to determinate low, middle and high achievers. While interviews were use as supporting data related to the efforts of the students in improving English achievement. The result indicated that: (1) The most students with high level score used memory strategies, the students with middle level score used compensation strategy, and the most students at low score used affective strategy. (2) there are various efforts used by the students to improve their English achievement such as by watching English movies. Most of the students preferred reading the text quickly to find the main ideas. Meanwhile, to practice their writing, most of them looked at the right pattern of sentences. The researcher suggested English teachers to find their students’ learning strategies in order to design interesting teaching learning process and suit to students’ strategies in learning.
