Teaching reading can be more effective by using appropriate approach. One of the approaches is Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) approach. The objective of this study is to look at how the teachers apply CTL approach in teaching reading and also to investigate the students’ perspective after they are taught by using CTL approach. It focuses on the implementation of CTL approach used by the teacher in the classroom and students’ perspective after they are taught by using CTL approach. The methodology used in this study is descriptive qualitative research. The subjects are two teachers who teach the second grade students at MAN Model Banda Aceh. This study was conducted by doing observation in the classroom when teaching and learning process and giving the questionnaire to the students at the end of the teaching and learning process. The result showed that one teacher applied the seven principles of CTL appropriately, while another applied only five components of CTL. The students enjoyed learning and motivated in reading by using the seven principles of CTL. Thus, it is recommended to teachers to use the principles of CTL approach in teaching reading in order to make the students are interested in learning reading.
