Title : The Implementation of Team Game Tournament in Teaching Reading Comprehension
(A Descriptive qualitative study at SMPN 3 Mutiara, Pidie)

This qualitative research was conducted to observe the implementation of Team Game Tournament in teaching reading comprehension and the teacher’s responses at SMPN 3 Mutiara, Pidie. The data were collected through observation, interview and document analysis. The observation lists and interview item were adapted from Slavin (1990) and interview items were adapted from Brown (2000); Wong (2011); Sari (2003); Devrie (2006); O’ Mahony (2006) and Rixon (1992). The subject of this research was students and a teacher of second grade class of SMPN 3 Mutiara, Pidie, and they were chosen purposively. The data were analyzed by using naration form. From the result of the data analysis it shows that the teacher did not apply the technique well as suggested by Slavin (1990). The total items of Team Game Tournament technique are 9 items, and among of which, the teacher only performed 4 items accordingly, and then she skipped or did not perfom 5 items. The teacher should have applied the Team Game Tournament technique accordingly in order to become quite successfull in improving students’ reading comprehension.
