Abstract Name : Nazariah Student No : 1006102020077 Study Program : English Education Title : The Use of Directed Reading Activity (DRA) in Increasing Students’ Reading Ability in Understanding Narrative Text. (An Experimental Study at SMPN 11 Banda Aceh) Keywords : Directed Reading Activity (DRA) Strategy, Teaching Reading, Narrative Text The aim of this research is to find out whether the use of Directed Reading Activity (DRA) strategy can increase the students’ reading ability or not. This research is quasi experimental with time-series design. The sample of this research was the students of VIII-2 class of SMPN 11 Banda Aceh which was chosen through random sampling technique. The test used was short essay questions about narrative text. The data were analyzed by using statistical procedure, while to test the hypothesis the writer used line graphic pattern. The result shows that Directed Reading Activity (DRA) increases the students’ reading ability. This finding is proven by the posttest mean scores are higher than the pretest scores. Mean score of pretests is stable from the first to the third pretest, (40.31), whereas mean scores result of posttests increase continuously from the first to the last posttest; they are (65), (65.31), and (69.4). However, the score increases partially, the class does not reach the KKM expectation of 75. To conclude, Directed Reading Activity (DRA) strategy gives positive effects toward the students’ score in reading ability.
