ABSTRACT Name : Hayatun Fauza Student Number : 1309200080068 Jurusan/ Strata : MPBEN/ S2 Title : The Use of Hand Puppets Show Media to Enhance Students’ SpeakingSkill and Motivation (An Experimental Research to the Second Year Students of SMPN 1 Krueng Mane, Aceh Utara) Keywords: Speaking Skill and Students’ Motivation, Hand Puppet Show Media This research was conducted to investigate if the use of Hand Puppet Show Media in teaching speaking enhance the students’ speaking skill and also to know the students’ motivation toward the implementation of Hand Puppet show media in teaching speaking to the second year students of SMPN 1 Aceh Utara.The research design used was quasi experimental design. The population of the study was the eighth graders of SMPN 1 Krueng Mane. The total number of the sample was 48 students, class VIII 1 as the experimental group and class VIII 2 as the control group. The data of this research were collected by giving tests; pretest, posttest, and questionnaire. The data were analyzed by using SPSS 17 to search for t-test score in order to find out the differences in achievement between the students at experimental and control groups in term of the speaking skill. The percentage formula was used to analyze the students’ motivation toward the implementation of Hand Puppet Show Media in the experimental group. From the statistical result,it is found the mean score of Control Group in the pre-test is 54.04 which is higher than the mean score of Experimental Group in the pre-test 53.92. While, the statistical result for Experimental Group post-test and Control group show that the mean score of Experimental Group in the post-test is 64.17 which is higher than Control group in the post-test (58.25). The significance value of both the experimental and control groups in the post-test is 0.01 which is lower than α=0.05. It means that Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected and it can beconcluded that the use of Hand Puppet Media in teaching speaking skill is more effective in enhancing the students’ speaking skill than teaching speaking without using Hand Puppet Show Media. Meanwhile, based on the students’ respond to the questionnaire which is contained of 15 statements and given for 24 students at experimental group, showed this media could increase the students’ motivationin learning speaking skill. The percentage of the students answered of questionnaire is 82.3% and it is categorized that the students have strong motivation toward the use of Hand Puppet Show media in learning speaking. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di SMPN 1 Krueng Mane.Populasi penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa kelas VIII SMPN 1 Krueng Mane, ada dua kelas yang terpilih sebagai sampel penelitian yaitu kelas VIII/1 sebagai kelas experiment dan kelas VIII/2 sebagai kelas kontrol. Setiapkelasterdiridari 24 mahasiswa and total keseluruhan sample adalah 48 siswa. Penelitian ini merupakan sebuah penelitian quasi. Data penelitian di dapatkan melalui uji: pretest, posttest, dan kuisoner. Data yang telah terkumpul di analisa menggunakan SPSS 17untuk mendapatkan nilai t-test. Hal ini dilakukan untuk menemukan perbedaan antara peningkatan kemampuan siswa dalam skill speaking di antara siswa di kelas experimen yang diberikan treatment (Hand Puppet Show Media) dan kelas control yang tidak diberikan treatment. Rumus persentase digunakan untuk menganalisa motivasi siswa terhadap penggunaan media boneka tangan dalam pembelajaran speaking dikelas experimen. Hasil statistik dari pengolahan data Kelompok Eksperimental dan kelompok Kontrol menunjukkan bahwa nilai rata-rata pre test kelompok control adalah 54.04 lebih tinggi dari pada kelas experiment yaitu 53.92. Sedangkan dari hasil rata- rata post test kelompok Eksperiment adalah 64.17 yang mana hasilnya lebih tinggi daripada nilai rata- rata post test kelompok kontrol yaitu (58.25). Selain itu, nilai signifikansi kelompok eksperimental dan kontrol dalam post-test adalah 0.01 yang manalebih rendah dari α = 0,05. Artinya Ha diterima dan H0 ditolak. Ini bermakna nilai speaking pada kelas experiment lebih tinggi dari pada nilai speaking pada kelas control. Dari hasil penjabaran ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan boneka tangan sebagai media dalam mengajarkan speaking skill sangat effektif untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa. Selain itu, dari hasil 15pernyataan dalam kuesioner yang diberikan kepada siswa di kelas eksperimen di dapatkan bahwa penggunaan media ini dapat meningkatkan motivasi belajar siswa dalam mempelajari keterampilan speaking.Persentase hasil jawaban kuestionaire siswa adalah 82.3%.
