APPLYING TWO STAY TWO STRAY (TSTS) TECHNIQUE TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENT IN WRITING DESCRIPTIVE TEXT (AN EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH AT SMAN 4 BANDA ACEH)

The objectives of this study were to find out whether there was any significant difference in writing ability between the students who were taught by using two stay two stray (TSTS) technique and those who were taught by using individual writing technique and to identify what the progress of each writing aspect made by the students after being taught by using two stay two stray technique were. This research was an experimental study. The population of this study was all of the first grade students of SMAN 4 Banda Aceh. There were two classes taken randomly as the sample, namely the control group and the experimental group which consisted of 28 students for each group. The quantitative data was obtained from the result of the pre-test and post-test score of students’ writing. After scoring the students’ writing based on Heaton’s writing scoring rubric, the writer used SPSS program version 20 to calculate t-test. The first result showed that the students who were taught writing by using TSTS technique achieved better performance in writing descriptive text compared to those who were taught by using individual writing technique. P-value got from T-test was 0.02, it was less than the level of significance (0.05). In other word, there was significant improvement in writing descriptive text between students who were taught by using TSTS technique and those who were taught by using individual writing technique. Furthermore, the mean score of the post-test of the experimental group increased 13.35 points compared to the pre-test, while there was a progress of 6.67 points in the control group. The second result was that the students in the experimental group showed a great improvement in the five aspects of writing (11% progress in content and mechanics as well, 17% in organization, 15% in vocabulary, and 13% in grammar aspect). In conclusion, students’ achievement in writing descriptive text improved significantly after learning through TSTS technique.
